Protecting Your Dog From Fleas

The easy natural ways to protect your dog from fleas.

o Make use of vacuum cleaners to get rid of dust. Do not forget to seal the vacuum bags before you dispose them off.

o These parasites mostly breed on your dog's bed. You must clean the bedding once a week with warm soapy water.

o Use of a dog shampoo also helps in keeping the fleas away.

o Cedar made products are naturally flea repellent. Use cedar shampoo for your dog and also put cedar oil on their beds.

o A dogs dry skin attracts fleas. To keep their skin moist you should refrain from doing too much shampooing. Linatone oil in their food can also help.

o A mixture of brewer's yeast and garlic can be given in small doses to your pet. This creates a certain odor in pets, and seems to repel fleas.

o Fresh or dried pennyroyal leaves is also a natural flea repellent. Use this in carpets to avoid the abundance of fleas in your home. However, do not use it if you have small children around, as this could be toxic.

o You may also use a mixture of lavender oil and rock salt to bathe your dog and sprinkle it in the places where dogs usually prefer to rest.

o Marigolds can also be planted in your backyard as it keeps away fleas, as well as other certain kinds of bugs.

o You may also give your dog a quick bath in boiled lemon water or by using orange peels in the water. This can also be used for soaking your dogs bedding for a few hours before washing it with warm soapy water.

Remember that bathing your dog will only work if the infestation is low. In fact, these methods of keeping fleas away are only preventive in nature and wouldn't work well if the infestation level is too high.

There are number of commercially made products that are also available in the market. Let us take a look at them.

o Advantage: This is a product from Bayer having imidaclorid as the active ingredient. Advantage comes in liquid form and is applied on the dog's back. It quickly kills the fleas by breaking the nervous system of the fleas and its effect lasts for about a month. Although it is a liquid, it is safe for your dog as it does not get absorbed into its bloodstream.

Advantage also kills the flea larvae.

K9 Advantix: Also from Bayer, it has quickly become the favorite of veterinarians and dog owners. It is for dogs only. Its active ingredients are Imidacloprid and Permethrin. It kills fleas, mosquitoes, and ticks, including deer ticks and keeps working after swimming or bathing.

o Frontline Plus: Frontline is not much different from Advantage except that it is not soluble in water. The product can be used safely for your dogs and puppies. It is very efficient in repelling the fleas and its effect can last for over four months.

It contains Fipronil as its active ingredient.

Like Advantage, Fipronil also attacks the nervous system and causes instant death in about 24 hours. In spite of being highly toxic it is not harmful to your dog, unless your dog is not allergic to fipronil.

o Biospot: Biospot is meant for dogs only. It kills up to 75% of fleas and larvae and is also effective for mosquitoes. Biospot can temporarily alter the color of your pet's hair and make it appear yellowish. It contains permethrins and IGR and is effective for about a month.

o Knockout: Another effective product that is exclusively meant for dogs. Its active ingredients include Pyriproxyfen: 21 pyridine: 0.05% cyclopropanecarboxylate: 2%. It also contains NYLAR to control the flea growth.

o Proban and Prospot: Again exclusively and widely used for dogs. However these repellents only work when the fleas bite the dog as they are effective only after they are absorbed in the bloodstreams. You also need to remember that you are injecting a small quantity of poison into your dogs body and you may not even know the side effects. Also, if your dog is allergic to the flea bites these may not be the right products.

Fleas thrive during the summer as it is their breeding season. Commercial products are effective during this time, but it is always better to consult your vet before you actually begin to using these products on your dog.

6 MONTH K9 ADVANTIX Blue (For dogs over 55lbs)

6 MONTH K9 ADVANTIX Blue (For dogs over 55lbs) Review

I used to swear by Frontline until our groomer started finding fleas and tics on our Schnauzers. Frontline had always been such a lifesaver. I don't know whether they changed their formula or my three dogs suddenly developed a resistance to the product. I can remember life prior to Frontline, where the only alternative was flea/tic sprays and powders and I was afraid we were going to return to those days. That's when we decided to try Advantix. We have not had any problem yet. My vet said this is a banner year for tics but our pets seem to be protected so far, with no adverse reaction to the product. I actually had to purchase Advantix in 3 levels--for the different weights of our dogs--below 21 lbs, 21-55 lbs, and over 55 lbs (for a local stray who was dropped off in our neighborhood).

Dealing with Dog Allergies

Dog allergies are very similar to human allergies and also produce the same symptoms as human allergies. There are 5 types of dog allergies: food allergy, flea allergy, bacteria allergy, contact allergy and atopy. Here are some basic facts about each of these allergies.

Food Allergies

The most common symptom of food allergies is scratching, due to skin irritation. Dog foods contain a host of ingredients which can cause an allergic reaction to your dog. Some of these ingredients are:

Meats: Beef, Chicken, Pork, Lamb, Fish, Eggs

Diary products (Milk)

Grains (Wheat, Whey)
Corn

Most dog owners often scold their dog for scratching too much. Any obsessive behavior your dog demonstrates, such as constant scratching, chewing, licking, requires immediate attention. Never assume that this is just a new habit your dog picked up. Dog allergies can make your dog very uncomfortable.

Aside from scratching, some of the other symptoms dogs can experience are:

sneezing

coughing

eye and nose discharge

Itching around the anus

hair loss

loss of appetite

pawing at their ears or head shaking

vomiting

diarrhea

breathing problems

Isolating the allergen which causes the allergy is not easy because the dog is usually allergic to one specific ingredient in the food. Therefore, it is a matter of isolating that ingredient. You can try doing this with an elimination diet, which most people don't have the time or energy for. The elimination diet requires preparing specially-cooked meals consisting of a more exotic meat, like rabbit or venison, mixed with rice or potato, which wouldn't normally be found in dog food.

An easier and more modern approach to test for the presence of a food allergy is to try a dog food which contains hydrolyzed proteins, such as Purinas HA or Hills z/d. Hydrolyzed proteins are broken down into molecules so small, they can't affect the immune system, which is what causes the allergy. If the allergy goes away while your dog is on this diet (which would take about 8 weeks), then he most likely is suffering from a food allergy. At this point, you would start to re-introduce the possible allergens one by one (individual meats, wheat, corn, milk, etc.) for a period of two weeks each. If the symptoms return, it is most likely due to the ingredient being introduced at that time. You should look out for that ingredient on dog food labels in future purchases.

Atopy (inhalant allergy)

Atopy is the most common of all dog allergies, which is caused by environmental factors, such as dust mites, molds, house dust, human dander, feathers or pollen.

Signs of atopy include excessive chewing, licking and scratching at the face, paws, abdomen, armpits and genital area. Evidence of this behavior can be found in examining your dog's paws, armpits and genital area. Reddish-brown stains develop in these areas due to excessive licking. This may not be evident in dogs with dark coats.

Atopy is not easy to diagnose due to other dog allergies having the same symptoms. Once these other dog allergies (food, flea and contact) have been ruled out, your vet can proceed with testing for the root cause of the atopy. The most accurate method of testing for atopy is Intradermal Skin Testing.

There are many different treatment options for atopy. The best treatment would be avoiding the allergen altogether. If this is not feasible, other treatments include cool water baths with medicated shampoo, antihistamines, allergy shots, corticosteriods or a diet rich in Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids.

Flea Allergies

Dog allergies to fleas are not caused by the flea itself, but rather the flea's saliva. A common symptom of flea allergies is scratching at the tail area which causes hair loss, scabs and sores. Your vet can easily diagnose a flea allergy by checking for the presence of fleas in the coat. Fleas can be seen by the naked eye. Intradermal Skin Testing can also be used to test for this type of allergy. The most effective products for eliminating fleas are:

Advantage - Flea control for your Dog & CatFrontLine - Flea & Tick

Medication for your Dog & Cat

Capstar- Flea infestation on Dog and Cat

K9 Advantix Flea and Tick Medication (based on dog's weight)

Bacterial Allergies

A dog's skin normally harbors Staph bacteria. Usually, this bacteria does not have any affect on your dog but some dogs develop a sensitivity to it causing an allergic reaction. Your dog may develop crusts on the skin and patches of hair loss due to scratching, similar to ring worm. If these patches become infected, your dog will need to be treated with antibiotics.

Contact Allergies

Contact allergies are the least common of all dog allergies. This type of allergy produces swelling, redness, itching and hair loss. Common contact allergens include flea collars, plastic food bowls, pet sweaters, plants, grass or wool bedding. The best way to diagnose this allergy is if the symptoms continue after ruling out all other allergies. If this is the case, then you must pinpoint the allergen and remove it from your dog's environment.

This information is NOT intended to replace the advice of a veterinarian, dog trainer or pet care professional.

Flea and Tick Prevention For Pets

If you have a pet dog or cat, chances are good that you have given some thought to preventing him from getting fleas or ticks. Or perhaps you've discovered in the past that your pet was infested with fleas, or maybe you found a tick buried deep inside his skin and had to pull it out. If so, you realize the discomfort that fleas and ticks can cause our poor little friends, and why it is so important to practice prevention.

Fleas feed on animal blood. When fleas bite our pets, numerous problems can develop, such as redness, skin irritation, allergic reactions, anemia, or even death. It is rare, but it can happen. Fleas can also carry tapeworms, and transfer them to your pet. If you see small, rice like creatures around your dog's rectum, chances are that he has contracted tapeworms.

To prevent your pet from becoming infested with fleas, inspect him every night with a flea comb. Remove any fleas that you find, and pluck them out if they are embedded in his skin. Sometimes it helps to spread some Vaseline onto the flea comb in order to make the fleas stick to it. Check between your dog's toes, around and in his ears, under his tail, and underneath all of his legs, where his legs meet his body. If you are washing your dog, spread a white towel under him while you rinse him. Usually fleas fall out during rinsing, and will be easily seen on the white towel.

If you find a tick embedded in your pet's skin, you are going to have to remove the entire tick. The simplest way to do this is to use a pair of tweezers. Grasp the tick as close to the skin of your pet as possible, trying not to crush the tick's body. If you crush the tick while it is still biting your pet, diseases could be transferred into your pet's bloodstream. Pull back slowly on the tweezers until the tick slides out of your pet's skin. Do not jerk or twist as you pull. Discard the tick by flushing it down the toilet.

There are several flea and tick prevention remedies available today that are relatively easy to use. You don't need to apply them year round, but you might consider using them during flea and tick season. Frontline, K9 Advantix, and Advantage are a few of the well-known effective brand names. Apply once a month during flea and tick season, do a daily flea and tick check as described above, bathe your pet once a week, and you should have a flea and tick free animal in no time!

12 MONTH K9 ADVANTIX Red (for dogs 21-55lbs)

12 MONTH K9 ADVANTIX Red (for dogs 21-55lbs) Review

I have 4 dogs and also rescue/foster. I live in a warm climate where fleas and other insects are prevelent. I'm a firm believer in keeping all of my pets up to date on vaccines, heartworm prevention and flea/tick prevention.

I have used Advantix for years and have never had an indication of a single flea or tick bite on any of my animals during that time. Frontline is more expensive than Advantix and supposedly better, but I firmly believe Advantix does its job well.

Amazon is cheaper than 1-800 Pet Meds and any where else that I've found for purchasing 6 month supplies or greater of Advantix.

12 MONTH K9 ADVANTIX Red (for dogs 21-55lbs) Feature

  • Each package of K9 Advantix for Dogs lasts 4 to 6 months (One vial per month)

Advantix For Dogs Versus K-9 Advantix Versus Frontline Plus - How to Choose the Best Pet Meds!

OK, pet lovers, let's cut straight to the point. No matter how much you love your pets, your kids, or your significant other, you're more comfortable snuggling with them if they don't have fleas and ticks, right?

Well, now it's easier than ever to find safe and effective flea and tick spray for your dog or cat. In fact there are 3 leading name brand products for dogs (K-9 Advantix for dogs only, Advantage flea killer and Frontline Plus for dogs) and two for cats (Advantage Flea Killer and Frontline Plus for cats) that vets recommend and users endorse because they work.

You can buy any of these products for around $10-$15/month, depending on where you buy them, whether you buy in bulk, and which product you choose. Some of the best deals are to be found online. You can get free same-day shipping on most orders, and you can often get discount coupons or find sales to save an addition 15% or so on your order. (These products are usually 20-50% less online than at your vet's, anyway.)

I personally recommend Frontline Plus, since that is the product that I used for my dog, Kera who is a "Goldador" (Labrador x Golden Retriever mix). She was a guide dog puppy in training and the guide dog school was very strict. They said that we puppy raisers MUST use flea and tick control products and then said it MUST be one of the three I mentioned above.

Ingredients in K-9 Advantix for dogs and Advantage Flea Killer

The difference between canine Advantage and K-9 Advantix for dogs is that K-9 Advantix has 2 active ingredients (Imidacloprid and Permethrin) and Advantage for dogs or cats has just one (Imidacloprid). Advantage, with fewer active ingredients, also has fewer listed potential side effects. If you're trying to decide on using K-9 Advantix for dogs versus Advantage, I would start with Advantage (cheaper, fewer chemicals) and see if it is effective for your dog. If you need something stronger, than escalate to K9 Advantix for dogs, or in the case of a cat, switch to Frontline Plus for cats due to the different chemical make up of the medicine.

Ingredients in Frontline Plus For Dogs or Cats

Frontline Plus has an entirely different set of active ingredients (Fipronil and S-methoprene) and is also not listed as having any known side effects. You can start with Frontline, or switch to Frontline if Advantix or Advantage is not working for you. I will point out that Frontline Plus is the only one of the three that indicates it is safe to use for puppies or kittens as young as 8 weeks or on pregnant/lactating female dogs. However, it's always a good idea to check with your veterinarian before using any pesticide products if you have a dog or cat whose health is sensitive.

Pick Your Favorite Flea Control To Start With, And See If It Works For You!

The bottom line is that it is important to use some kind of flea control product on your dog or cat if you live in an area with fleas, mosquitoes or ticks. These parasites suck blood and can carry diseases. The disease can spread from wild animals to pets and to humans.

Be safe - take care of your pet and your family - with a safe and effective year-round flea control regimen.

Emily J. Cressey loves comparison shopping to find great deals on cheap flea control products!

K-9 Advantix for dogs stacks up well against the competition. Click here to buy K-9 Advantix for dogs and read product reviews comparing K-9 Advantix to other leading flea control products.

K9 Advantix Flea Killer

Are you searching for a product that will guarantee your four - legged friend is flea free?

Do you want to prevent your dog from bringing fleas into the house and infesting your home?

Have you tried numerous products that promise relief from flea infestation only to find they don't work all the time?

Well Advantix K9 Flea Killer is guaranteed to be 100% effective in repelling and killing fleas.

How are they able to make that claim?

Tests have shown that the two active ingredients - imidacloprid + permethrin - working together - provide a double layer of effectiveness by affecting the parasite on contact. Fleas stop biting in the first 5 minutes. Combined the two proven ingredients kill fleas by shutting down their central nervous system. Each ingredient attacks different sites within the parasite nerve cell and overwhelms it - therefore providing relief to our furry friends.

Advantix K9 Flea Killer comes in 4 strengths - according to the size of your dog.

Each box holds 4 or 6 individual doses.

Each dose provides one full month of protection.

Keeping your dog safe from harm and discomfort is a primary concern for every owner and treating your pet with a product that offers a guarantee is the answer.

But you also want a product that is easy to use and convenient.

Advantix K9 Flea Killer comes in a premeasured dose and takes minutes to administer.

Have your dog in a standing position - part the fur between the shoulder blades and empty the vial onto the exposed skin. If you have a larger dog, over 20lbs, you should place the drops in 3 spots of equal distance apart, along the back.

Your dog will spread the dose around the skin with its natural movements.

Once the flea treatment has been absorbed into the skin it will be waterproof and provide protection after swimming and bathing.

With a simple procedure such as this, why wouldn't you want to make sure your dog is going to be flea free and healthy?

Owners who fail to treat their dogs are leaving them open to discomfort and potentially nasty health issues but those who choose to treat with a proven effective method are going to be rewarded with a pet that will be around for a long time.

Dogs that suffer from Flea Allergic Dermatitis can become miserable and unpredictable. Any pet that is in distress can display uncharacteristic behavior. Flea Allergic Dermatitis is a condition that afflicts a number of dogs who are allergic to the saliva of the flea. It can cause patches of bare skin where the dog constantly gnaws at the irritated and inflamed area. Treating your dog with Advantix K9 Flea Killer assures your pet won't suffer this debilitating condition.

Are you a pet lover that wants the best health for their pet? Of course you are, you want your pet to be happy and healthy. Click Here to get the best pet flea, tick and insect treatment, that both kills and prevent these pests. Compare Topical Flea Medications - Finding the Best For Your Pet

As much as you value the health of your pet dogs, it is recommended that you compare topical flea medications in order to arrive at the most effective treatment for your dog's case. Fleas are among the most common parasites that infest our pets and so veterinarians are still looking for effective treatment to not only remedy but fully eliminate this condition.

However, not many realize that the dosage and form of medication given to their pets are essential determiners of the success (or failure of treatment applied). Hence, before you continue shopping for applications or treatment to administer to your pets, why not look into several factors that would enhance the effectiveness of the treatment applied.

The first thing you need to understand is that not all dogs are the same. They have different body structure, body weight, and age; hence you cannot expect one type of medication in the same dosage to work effectively for all. Since there are several flea and tick control products in the market, we will aim to discuss only those most commonly used and widely available in the market.

Advantage® flea and tick control are effective in several ways. First, they kill adult fleas and stop the development of smaller fleas. You must administer this medication to your pet topically on a monthly basis. However, you cannot apply this medication to dogs that are less than 8 weeks old. The active ingredient for this medication is Fipronil.

K9 Advantix, which consists mainly of Permethrin and Imidacloprid, is also administered to your pet topically on a monthly basis. It is best recommended for use on dogs that are at least 8 weeks old. By using K9 Advantix, you will effectively eliminate adult fleas that infest your pet dog's body, as well as those developing ones. Meanwhile, it is also effective against ticks, which serve as carriers for Lyme Disease, and mosquitoes.

Frontline® has Fipronil as active ingredient, while Frontline Plus® also contains Methoprene IGR aside from Fipronil. Both flea medications are applied topically once per month and for dogs not younger than 8 weeks.

While both Frontline® and Frontline Plus® are effective in killing adult fleas and ticks, only the former is able to stop the life cycle of younger fleas and prevent them from developing further. Hence, if you are aiming for not only temporary relief from fleas but want to full elimination, Frontline® might be the better option for your pet.

Fleas have been a long time problem experienced by pets. Therefore, it is not enough that you purchase medications that you hope will provide the solution to your problem. Maintain your immediate environment's cleanliness because if you do not, then there might be several fleas and ticks that could thrive in moist and damp areas. Another thing that you have to bear in mind is that you must have enough knowledge on how to properly and effectively administer the medications you provide for your pet. Compare topical flea medications for a more satisfying result and a healthier pet!
